Apples are not just one of my favorite dessert ingredients but also one of my favorite snacks. They can be used to make baked apples or a festive treat like this make-ahead apple crisp. However, occasionally you find yourself with extra ingredients that need to be used up, in which case this single serving apple crisp recipe is helpful.

When you just have one apple that is no longer fit for fresh consumption, this single serve apple crisp is the ideal solution. There aren’t enough apples to create applesauce in the Instant Pot, but you still want to use them before they go too soft.

All that’s left to do is It should be chopped, combined with flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon, and then topped with a crumble made of butter.

Types Of Apples to Use

This recipe can truly be made with any apple, although I do have a few favorites and some apple varieties that I normally steer clear of.

My top choices are gala, ambrosia, fuji, honey crisp, and granny smith. These single serve apple crisps can be made with either sweet or tart apples; however, when baking with apples, it’s best to have a mixture of sweet and sour apples to intensify the tastes. Whatever, it’s delicious!

I personally steer clear of macintosh and red delicious since I find that when they are baked, their texture turns mealy and unpleasant.


You will need an oven-safe dish for these single-serve apple crisps. I prefer to use 20 oz. Corningware dinner mugs or large ramekins (10 to 14 ounces). In a pinch, you could even use a glass meal prep container that is oven-safe (go for a 3 cup container).

How To Prepare

  • Peeling and slicing our apple into pieces of 1/2 inch is the first step in preparing these apple crisps. It should be mixed with flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon before being placed in the ramekin or baking dish.
  • Melted butter is then combined with brown sugar, rolled oats, cinnamon, and cardamom to prepare the crumble topping. Add some on top of the apples.

Bake Immediately

  • If baking right away, use a 350°F oven. To make it simpler to put and remove the ramekins from the oven, place them in a row on a baking dish.
  • 30 minutes of baking followed by ice cream topping and enjoyment!

Freeze For Later

  • Simply cover the ramekin with foil or a lid if freezing it for later. Put in the freezer, where it can stay for up to three months.

Healthy Apple Crisp For Two


Apple crumble made in a small amount is ideal for 2 (two) servings/people. Golden crispy oat and flour crumble is placed on top of apples that have been caramelized and flavored with cinnamon and butter.



  • 1/3 cup oats
  • 1/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 tbsp castor sugar
  • 4 tbsp melted butter (see note 1)

Apple filling

  • 1 cup apple (1 medium sized apple chopped in cubes)
  • 1 1/2 tbsp castor sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon powder
  • 1/2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp vanilla essence


  1. Set the oven’s temperature to 180°C.
  2. Mix the oats, flour, melted sugar, and castor sugar in a bowl. A crumble will emerge after stirring with a spoon. Set apart.
  3. Chopped apples, cinnamon, lemon juice, vanilla extract, and castor sugar should all be combined in a bowl. Mix the cinnamon, sugar, and vanilla together until the apples are well covered.
  4. Put two ramekins with the apple mixture in each.
  5. Place the ramekins in the preheated oven and bake for 15 minutes after topping each with crumble.
  6. Give the ramekins about five minutes to cool. Serve alongside ice cream or add a special touch by adding homemade salted caramel sauce.


  • The apple crumble recipe on my blog generally calls for unsalted butter, but I used salted butter for this dish and it turned out just fine—maybe even better—but it’s absolutely up to you whether to use salted or unsalted butter.

Let me show you my original recipe, step by step and all the delicious details that make it so yummy. Apple Crisp Recipe is a single-serving dessert recipe (eight 5″ tin foil ‘cups’ yields one 9″ casserole) that mixes all the ingredients into one dish rather than layering them in individual serving plates as is commonly done.

Makes 8-10 individual servings


For the crisp:

  • 2 sticks of butter, cut into cubes
  • 1 ½ cups of all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 cup of crushed pecans
  • ½  teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt

For the filling:

  • 8-10 apples, peeled and sliced
  • ½ cup brown sugar, packed
  • 3 tablespoons of corn starch
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • ¼ teaspoon of nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon of salt


  1. Make the filling. Over low heat, combine all the filling ingredients in a saucepan. Cook for 5-7 minutes, or until sugar has dissolved and apples are tender. Remove heat after that.
  2. Clean up crisp.
  3. Prepare crisp while apples are softening. Combine all of the ingredients (apart from the butter) in a bowl. The crumble should next be topped with cubed, chilled butter. Use a fork to stir, or combine with your hands. If there are clumps of various sizes, that is acceptable.
  4. Assemble.
  5. Fill Souper Cubes® trays with apples until they are about two-thirds full. then top with crisp mixture.
  6. Set the lid on top of the tray and place it in the freezer to enjoy later.
  7. Take out the Souper Cubes® of Apple Crisp when you are prepared to bake, and then turn the oven on to 350 degrees. Bake the crumb topping for 45 minutes, or until it is crisp and a rich golden brown color. Add your favorite ice cream or whipped cream as a garnish.

What kind of apples to use

I’ll start by admitting that I loathe cooking with apples. I don’t understand why such awful, sour apples are typically recommended for use in recipes, much less desserts! I greatly prefer the inherent sweetness of a regular eating apple since you can balance the flavors without adding excessive amounts of sugar. In making this crumble, I don’t add any sugar to the apple mixture. Additionally, an apple crumble for a single dish needs to be simple, therefore let’s choose components that are easily accessible.
