Apple Crumble With Granny Smiths


Here’s a wonderful recipe for Apple Crumble with Granny Smith apples. Curry powder, cornflour and egg yolks provide a little something extra to the already delicious combination of apple crumble and apple pie ingredients. The result? 1.5kg Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and cut into thin wedges
34 cup caster sugar
2 tbs lemon juice
13 cup sultanas
Vanilla ice-cream, to serve

1 cup plain flour
12 cup brown sugar
1 tsp ground cinnamon
125g butter, chilled and chopped
13 cup slivered almonds

STEP 1 Turn on the oven’s fan-forced heating to 180°C/160°C. In a bowl, combine the apples, sugar, lemon juice, and sultanas. Combine by tossing. Transfer to an 8-cup oven-safe dish that has been buttered.

STEP 2 In a food processor, combine the flour, sugar, and cinnamon to produce crumble. Combination procedure. Processing until roughly crushed after adding butter. Add almonds and stir. Apples should be covered in crumble. Bake for 50 minutes, or until apple is soft and topping is crisp and golden. With vanilla ice cream, serve.

  • ▢2 lb / 1kg Granny Smith Apples( green apples), weight before peeling
  • ▢1 tbsp white flour
  • ▢1/2 cup white sugar
  • ▢2 tbsp lemon juice (or water)
  • ▢1/2 tsp ground cinnamon


  • ▢1 cup rolled oats / oatmeal (quick cooking is ok)
  • ▢1 cup white flour
  • ▢1 cup brown sugar (loosely packed)
  • ▢1/2 tsp baking powder
  • ▢1 tsp cinnamon powder
  • ▢125g / 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • ▢Pinch of salt


  • ▢Vanilla ice cream


  • Heat the oven to 350°F/180°C.
  • Cut apples into 1.5cm/3/5″ cubes after peeling.
  • In a bowl, put an apple. Sprinkle with cinnamon, sugar, and flour before drizzling lemon juice over top. Spread everything evenly in a 1.5 liter/1.5 quart baking dish after tossing.
  • Place ingredients for a bowl’s topping. Mix until moist sand-like clumps form (see video). Spread the mixture over the apples and, if necessary, make it crumbly by using your fingers.
  • Until golden brown, bake for 30 to 40 minutes. Before serving, remove from the oven, cover loosely with foil to maintain warmth, and let stand for 10 minutes to allow the apple filling to meld.
  • With vanilla ice cream, serve warm!

Recipe Notes:

  1. Weighing comes PRIOR to coring and peeling. Granny Smith apples are great for this because they are a little sour. Any apple variety or even pears can be used.

Peaches work as well, although you can reduce the sugar a little. Any sort of berry works well in this recipe.

Whatever method you choose, keep the sugar in there since it helps the filling become a little jammy rather than watery.

  1. Weights – This recipe is quite forgiving and works whether using US cups or Imperial cups (i.e., what 99% of the rest of the world uses). Differences in cup measures are relative. Please use the specified weight measures as Japanese cups, which are smaller, won’t work with it.

  1. SWEETNESS: A few people have commented that they find this to be excessively sweet. I don’t have a really sweet tooth, but I adore this just the way it is. If you like less sweet foods, you can cut the topping’s sugar content to as little as 1/2 cup. It’s preferable to leave the sugar in Filling alone to prevent changes to the syrup’s consistency. Utilize green apples as well; they are less sweet than other varieties.
  2. Ice cream is not included in the nutrition per serving, assuming this serves 8.
