If you love BBQ sandwiches, then you’re going to absolutely love this beef for bbq sandwiches recipe! In my life, I have never seen a person who does not like a bbq sandwich. They are absolutely delicious and there is nothing more satisfying than eating one with a side of baked beans.

This recipe has been a family favorite for 35 years. Serve on hamburger buns that have been buttered on both halves, and lightly browned under broiler. Freeze some for lunches or dinner in a hurry.

  • 4 pounds boneless chuck roast
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons distilled white vinegar
  • 12 ounces chile sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon mustard powder
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ⅛ teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced


Instructions Checklist

  • Step 1Place roast in a large covered pan. Roast at 325 degrees F (165 degrees C) for 2 hours, or until the meat falls apart and shreds easily.
  • Step 2In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add onions, and saute until onions become translucent.
  • Step 3Stir in vinegar and chili sauce. Fill empty chili sauce bottle with water, shake, and pour liquid into skillet. Mix in brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, black pepper, salt, cayenne pepper, and garlic. Cook sauce over low heat, stirring often, until thickened.
  • Step 4With two forks, shred roasted beef. Stir meat into the sauce in the skillet, and simmer for 30 minutes.

 Slow Cooker BBQ Beef Sandwiches

Slow Cooker Sandwiches are quick, easy and feed a crowd. Plus, we love the fall apart tender meat bathed in sauce. These Slow Cooker BBQ Beef Sandwiches are fall apart tender and taste AMAZING thanks to the homemade bbq seasoning rub.

How do you make pulled meat sandwiches in the slow cooker? Here are some great tips!

  • Use an adequately fatty cut of meat: Use a chuck roast, not an eye of round. Use chicken thighs, not breasts. Use pork butt/shoulder, not pork tenderloin.
  • Season after searing: If you season then sear the meat hard you’ll scorch the seasonings. Plus with the long cooking time you’ll find the seasonings have plenty of time to flavor the meat.
  • Let it cook without a bunch of added liquids: This chuck roast will release a bunch of liquid, you don’t want the meat floating in liquid.
  • Let it cook another hour after adding sauce: Warmed sauce is infinitely more delicious that cold bottled sauce and the meat will stay moist in the slow cooker with the added sauce.

Homemade BBQ Rub Seasoning Recipe:

  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder

Things I’m in love with in this recipe? Not standing outside in the heat looking at the smoker. It’s been over 100 degrees outside all week!

Slow Cooker pulled beef

You can make these sandwiches infinitely better toasting the hoagie rolls with a bit of brushed on melted butter. If using hamburger buns you can use brioche rolls like I do anytime we enjoy sloppy joe recipes.

If you’re making these sandwiches ahead of time for lunches just be sure to package the filling in a separate container or ziplock bag or saran wrap pouches.

Easy BBQ Beef Sandwich Recipe


  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 3 to 3 1/2 lb chuck or bottom round beef roast
  • 1 tablespoon each garlic powder and onion powder (optional)
  • 1/2 cup barbecue sauce    
  • 1/2 cup zesty steak sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 
  • 10 to 12 sandwich buns
  • Sliced red onion, Cole slaw, dill pickles and carrot sticks (optional)
  • Reynolds® Slow Cooker Liner 


Step 1

OPEN slow cooker liner and place it inside of a 5- to 6-quart slow cooker bowl. Fit liner snugly against the bottom and sides of bowl; pull top of liner over rim of bowl.
Step 2

PLACE onions evenly in liner. Place beef on top of onions. SPRINKLE beef with garlic powder and onion powder, if desired. MIX barbecue sauce, steak sauce and Worcestershire sauce; pour evenly over beef. Place lid on slow cooker.
Step 3

COOK on LOW for 8 to 10 hours or HIGH for 4 to 5 hours until beef is tender.
Step 4

CAREFULLY remove lid to allow steam to escape. PLACE roast on cooking board and shred with 2 forks, or slice thinly and chop, if you prefer. Stir in additional barbecue sauce, if desired. Serve shredded beef on buns. Add sliced red onion, Cole slaw, dill pickles and carrot sticks, if desired.
Step 5

REMOVE all food and juices from lined-slow cooker. COOL slow cooker completely. Do not lift or transport liner with food or liquids inside. Remove empty liner and toss.
