Cabbage Soup For Weight Loss

Cabbage soup for weight loss is a popular diet plan where you eat nothing but this soup for days. With ingredients like cabbage, it may seem silly, but the method can have significant health benefits.

I don’t know about you, but every time I go to the grocery store I’m always tempted to buy cabbage. To be fair, it is usually sitting in a nice little cooler near the fresh fruits and vegetables section so that can be a huge contributor to my temptation. I’m not sure why, but the bright green color just seems so inviting. Plus the way it looks curled up in that container is just cute.

  1. A low-calorie diet;
  2. Low-fat;
  3. High-fiber;
  4. It can be low-carb on most days.

Yet it is not vegetarian or vegan because limited amounts of beef and chicken are allowed on a couple of days. This is a rigid diet – with not a lot of room for tweaks, just like the military diet.

WHAT ARE THE PROS AND CONS?

Pros:

  • Quick weight loss – up to 10 pounds or more in only 7 days.
  • Body detox and a kickstart to a sustainable diet.
  • It may have anti-inflammatory properties, depending on the ingredients. Our diet cabbage soup recipe does have some, such as turmeric, garlic, lemon, and spinach.

Cons:

  • If you don’t drink plenty of water and start a balanced diet, you may re-gain the weight fast as well.
  •  It is a fairly boring diet since most of it consists of cabbage soup.

Yes! You may lose 10 pounds (4.5 kg) or more in 7 days. This is a fast weight-loss diet, ideal to shed weight after the holiday binge, or for a special event. But be aware that this is not a permanent solution because long-term your body can run out of essential nutrients.

Your blood sugar levels may drop a lot. It also won’t have a long-lasting impact on heart-disease, lowering cholesterol, or treating high blood pressure.

Here’s Why I Adore The Cabbage Soup Diet:

  • It works!! It’s not science. Cut your calories, unhealthy sugar, starches, for a period of time while drinking lots of water and you’ll lose weight quickly.
  • It’s quick!! By the morning of my 8th day, the scale is always 7-10 lbs lighter.  My clothes fit differently, and my usually bloated gut is flat. I love it!!!
  • I cheat!! I’ve discovered that I can cheat a bit on this diet. I’ve snuck a muffin in a few times. BEST. MUFFIN.EVER!! I’ve also used some condiments to spice things up.
  • Great for pre-diets!  This diet is GREAT for the start of a real diet/eating plan. You know, one where you eat a variety of healthy foods and a decent balance of calories. Sometimes you just need a jumpstart, a cleanse, a boost of confidence on the scale. This diet does it!

I know some people HATE these types of quick diets, but I love them! They work well for me, and the weight stays off as long as I eat a balanced post-diet. If you jump back to eating harmful sugars and carbs right away, you’re going to gain the weight back quickly.

Pace yourself. I mainly use this diet for quick weight loss for an event, the week before Thanksgiving, or jump-start my spring dieting before swimsuit season.

As always, consult a doc before cutting your calories like this!

What Is In a Cabbage Soup Diet Recipe?

There are plenty of cabbage soup diet recipes out there and all of them have one (obvious) ingredient in common: cabbage. Cabbage is low in calories and offers plenty of fiber that can help fill you up and feel satisfied. From a culinary perspective, cabbage is fairly mild compared to some of its cruciferous cousins like kale and broccoli. That makes it the perfect addition to a low-calorie soup, along with other non-starchy veggies like peppers, celery and carrots. To keep the calories down even further, cabbage soup diet recipes like this one feature a brothy base. The sodium in this recipe is kept in check by using low-sodium broth and a small amount of added salt. White-wine vinegar adds just a touch of tanginess which helps balance the flavors.
