Chicken with Hoisin Sauce Recipe is one of my favorite chicken recipes. It’s quick, simple, and very tasty. The hoisin sauce gives the dish a sweet and salty taste that goes great with chicken. One of the best things about this recipe is that it can be served hot or cold. Make a batch on Sunday and serve it on game day, take it to work in Tupperware for lunch or make some for dinner after a long day at work.

  • 400g chicken breasts, thinly sliced widthwise
  • 80ml (1/3 cup) hoisin sauce (see note)
  • 80ml (1/3 cup) peanut oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
  • 3cm piece ginger, cut into julienne (matchsticks)
  • 1 red onion, cut into wedges
  • 100g green beans, trimmed, sliced on the diagonal
  • 1 bunch baby pak choy, trimmed, roughly chopped
  • 1 small red capsicum, seeded, thinly sliced
  • 1 small yellow capsicum, seeded, thinly sliced
  • 2 spring onions, thinly sliced on the diagonal
  • Steamed white long-grain rice, to serve

  • Step 1Place chicken and 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce in a large bowl. Season with salt and pepper, then toss to combine. Stand at room temperature for 15 minutes to marinate.
  • Step 2Heat 2 tablespoons oil in a large wok over high heat. Add chicken and stir-fry for 4 minutes or until golden. Transfer to a plate. Wipe wok clean with paper towel.
  • Step 3Return wok to high heat with remaining 2 tablespoons oil. Add garlic and ginger, then stir-fry for 2 minutes or until garlic is light golden. Add red onion, beans, pak choy and red and yellow capsicums, then stir-fry for 2 minutes. Return chicken to wok with spring onions, remaining 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce and 2 tablespoons water. Stir-fry for a further 3 minutes or until chicken is cooked through and vegetables are tender, then season.

The secret to quick recipes like this is in the sauce. Instead of whipping up my own, requiring measuring, mincing, and whisking, I reach for a delicious jarred Hoisin sauce for the flavor. It’s kind of like an Asian barbecue sauce that’s a bit sweet, a bit savory, and a bit smoky. I love it!

Since I love all things spicy, I add some Asian garlic chili paste to this hoisin chicken recipe to kick things up – but it’s completely optional.

You can also easily add veggies to this dish. I would recommend cooking them first with a bit of oil before cooking the chicken. When you add the Hoisin, add the veggies back in so they stay nice and crispy.

Here is a bit more information about what I used.

  • Chicken: There are lots of ways that you can prepare chicken. For busy nights, just toss some shredded rotisserie chicken slices in the Hoisin sauce. Or, cut up and cook some boneless, skinless chicken breasts. You could also use chicken thighs or even pre-cooked frozen grilled chicken strips to make dinner even quicker.
  • Ginger: I added some fresh ginger to my sauce because I love how it really elevates the taste. However, this is optional. In fact, you can use dried ginger powder instead of fresh ginger in a pinch.
  • Hoisin Sauce: Use as much sauce as you need to cover the amount of chicken you prepare. You could make your own Hoisin sauce, but buying the jarred kind is such a time-saver.
  • Asian Chili Garlic Paste: Either chili garlic paste or Sriracha are fantastic to add to the sauce if you want it to have some heat. You can also completely omit this if you want to keep this dish on the sweeter side.

Whatever its form may be upon being cooked, its flavour may change but its flesh remains high in protein, low in fat and can be digested easily.

Ingredients for Chicken in Hoisin sauce Recipe

  • Boneless chicken thighs, cut into 1 inch cubes, 2
  • Hoisin sauce 3-4 tablespoons
  • Egg 1
  • Salt to taste
  • Crushed black peppercorns 1 teaspoon
  • Green chillies chopped 1-2
  • Garlic chopped 2
  • Cornflour/ corn starch 3-4 tablespoons
  • Onion 1 medium
  • Spring onions 2
  • Oil 2 tablespoons + to deep fry
  • Green capsicum thickly sliced 1
  • Red chilli sauce 2 tablespoons
  • Vinegar 1 teaspoon


Step 1

In a mixing bowl, add chicken. Break an egg in another bowl, whisk and add half to chicken.

Step 2

Add salt, crushed black peppercorn, half the green chillies, one teaspoon garlic, mix and keep aside for ten minutes.

Step 3

Now add two to three tablespoons of corn flour and mix.

Step 4

Heat sufficient oil in a kadai, add the chicken pieces one by one and deep fry till golden and crispy. Drain on an absorbent paper.

Step 5

Slice the onion and the spring onion bulbs. Also finely chop the spring onion greens and keep aside.

Step 6

Heat two tablespoons oil in a non-stick wok, add remaining green chillies, garlic and sauté nicely.

Step 7

Now add the sliced onions and sauté it for one to two minutes or till changes colour.

Step 8

Make slurry of the remaining corn flour.

Step 9

Add the capsicum and toss. Add the hoisin sauce, red chilli sauce and mix well. Add a little water and mix again.

Step 10

Add the slurry, mix. Add the fried chicken and toss.

Step 11

Finally add the spring onion greens, vinegar and mix. Serve hot.
