  • 3/4 cup whole-wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

  • 1/2 cup canola oil
  • 1/2 cup honey

Instructions Checklist

  • Step 1Preheat the oven to 325°. In a large bowl, mix the oats with the flour, walnuts, almonds, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. In a small bowl, whisk the oil with the honey and vanilla; drizzle over the crumb topping and mix until well coated.
  • Step 2Spread the crumble on a baking sheet in an even layer. Bake in the center of the oven for 25 to 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the crumble is golden brown. Transfer to a rack and let cool completely to crisp up, about 1 hour. Spoon the crumble over roasted or poached fruit or yogurt.

Rhubarb Oat Crumble

There is nothing more comforting than fruit crumble for dessert and this rhubarb and ginger oat crumble will not disappoint.  A combination of Scottish Jumbo Oats and ground almonds make a perfectly crumbly topping.

500g rhubarb

1 ball of stem ginger

1 tbsp stem ginger syrup, from the jar

1 tbsp maple syrup

150g Mornflake Scottish Jumbo Oats

130g ground almonds

80g dairy free butter/butter

35g coconut sugar

1 tsp ground cinnamon


Preheat the oven to 180°C.

Slice the rhubarb into 3cm pieces and add to a saucepan. Finely chop a ball of stem ginger and add to the rhubarb along with a tablespoon of the ginger syrup and a tablespoon of maple syrup.  Cook over a low heat for 8-10 minutes until the rhubarb is just cooked.

To make the crumble topping add the jumbo oats, ground almonds and butter to a large bowl and rub together with your fingers until combined.  Sprinkle in the sugar and ground cinnamon and stir together.

Spoon the cooked rhubarb into an ovenproof dish and cover the fruit evenly with the oat crumble topping.

Place the rhubarb crumble in the oven and cook for 20 minutes, until the oats turn golden on top.

A comforting recipe for Cherry, Oat and Almond Crumble made with delicious, wholesome ingredients that have been carefully chosen to improve quality of sleep. This can be made with frozen or fresh cherries.


Eating cherries regularly can boost your melatonin levels, regulate your sleep cycle and help relieve insomnia. In this fabulous crumble they are combined with oats, almonds and pumpkin seeds.


900g/2lbcherries, stoned
4 tbspcaster sugar
3 tbspwater
2 tspcornflour
a dashof lemon juice
3 tbspflaked almonds
crème fraîche or ice cream to serve
For the crumble:
150g/5ozplain flour
60g/2ozrolled oats
4 tbspground almonds
60g/2ozbrown sugar
2 tbsppumpkin seeds


Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/gas mark 4.

Put the cherries, sugar and water in a saucepan over a low heat and stir until the sugar dissolves. Bring to the boil, reduce the heat and simmer gently for 10 minutes until the cherries are tender and release some of their juice.

In a small bowl, stir the cornflour into a little of the cherry juices until smooth and free of lumps. Add to the cherries in the pan and stir with a wooden spoon until it starts to thicken. Add lemon juice to taste and spoon into a baking dish.

To make the crumble, cut the butter into small pieces and rub into the flour with your fingertips until it resembles fine breadcrumbs.

Stir in the oats, ground almonds, sugar and pumpkin seeds. Sprinkle with two to three teaspoons of cold water and give it a stir to create some small clumps.

Spoon the crumble over the cherries right up to the edge of the dish.

Sprinkle with the flaked almonds.

Bake in the preheated oven for 30–35 minutes until the crumble is crisp and golden brown and the fruit is bubbling around the edges. Serve hot with crème fraîche or ice cream.

Or you can try this . . .

Add some chopped walnuts or hazelnuts to the crumble mixture.

Add some ground ginger or cinnamon to the crumble mixture.

When cherries are out of season use apples or pears.

Ingredients to Make the Best Apple Crumble

Apples – I personally think Granny Smith apples work best for apple crumble. They taste really sweet, and stew nicely but any apples work great for this simple recipe. The apples don’t need to keep their shape as much as an apple pie. 
Brown Sugar – To add sweetness to the apples while they cook. The apples stew as they cook in the oven. You could swap this out for Demerara sugar or maple syrup if you prefer. 
Wholemeal Flour – Wholemeal or wholewheat flour is filled with nutrients and is a good source of fibre. So why not use it in this yummy dessert!
Rolled Oats – I suggest rolled oats for this recipe as quick oats will be too fine to add texture to the crumble topping.
Butter – I like to use salted but unsalted will work just fine too. Get the butter out prior to making your apple crumble topping so it has time to get to room temperature. This helps when mixing it with the flour. 
Coconut Sugar – You can swap this out for white sugar if you prefer but I like to use coconut sugar. It has a similar caramelised flavour to brown sugar when cooked.
Baking Powder – Any kind will work well.

How to Make Apple Crumble with Oats

  1. Preheat the oven to 190 degrees. 
  2. Peel the apples then chop them into four segments and remove the core. Slice them into thin pieces. Place the apples into a 20 x 20cm ovenproof dish. Layering them on top of each other. 
  3. Add filtered water to the apples, you want the water to be just below the top layer of apples. 
  4. Sprinkle the brown sugar and cinnamon over the apples. 
  5. Cut up the butter into small cubes. 
  6. Add the flour, baking powder and butter into a bowl. Rub the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles fine bread crumbs. 
  7. Add in the sugars and mix this well. 
  8. Add in the rolled oats and rub in with your fingers.
  9. Sprinkle the crumble mixture onto the apples. Cook in the oven for 30 minutes or until golden brown. 
  10. Serve warm with your favourite ice cream.

Can I Prepare Apple Crumble The Night Before?

I often bake an apple crumble the night before I have guests around. That way it’s ready to be warmed up and served quickly. Bake the apple crumble then let it cool down completely. From here you can wrap the dish in cling wrap and place it in the fridge to be heated the following day.  

Is This Apple Crumble Recipe Healthy? 

This recipe is a lot healthier than most as it uses wholemeal flour, rolled oats, and coconut sugar. You could swap out the brown sugar with maple syrup or Demerara sugar. We also like to eat our warm apple crumble with homemade condensed milk vanilla ice cream.  

What Are The Best Apples For Apple Crumble?

Granny Smith or Honey Crisp are the best apples to use as they don’t turn into mush after baking. They are sweet and go well with cinnamon and sugar. 

Can You Make This Apple Crumble Without Oats?

Yes! If you don’t like oats or don’t have any on hand don’t stress. Just simply omit them from the recipe and add in the same amount of flour. You could also crush up some nuts or desiccated coconut to add in if you want some texture to the crumble topping.  

Can I Swap the Flour to be Gluten-Free? 

Absolutely. I was gluten-free for quite a few years but that didn’t stop me from making my favourite dessert. This recipe is suitable to make with a plain gluten-free flour mix. I wouldn’t suggest using just coconut or almond flour for this recipe. 

How Long Will This Apple Crumble Last In The Fridge? 

Store the crumble in an airtight container for up to 3-4 days, if it lasts that long!  

Can You Keep Crumble Topping Mix In The Fridge?

You can make this apple crumble topping 1-2 days before baking. Make sure to store it in an airtight container in the fridge until you need to use it.  

Can You Freeze Apple Crumble? 

I wouldn’t suggest freezing a cooked apple crumble as the apples and topping will go soggy when thawed out. Try freezing the crumble mixture by itself in an airtight container. Use this within 2 months of freezing to avoid freezer burn or ice clumps.

Tips to Make the Best Oaty Apple Crumble 

  • Sprinkle on more brown sugar and cinnamon to add a deeper flavour and sweetness to the stewed apples. I never measure and add lots of cinnamon to mine!
  • You can swap out the cinnamon for allspice if you prefer it. 
  • Add in pear or berries if you have them. This crumble recipe works well for any fruit but apples are our favourite. 
  • Double the crumble recipe to make a bigger batch. We often double the topping but not the apples to enjoy more crumble.
  • This apple crumble will store well in the fridge, after it’s been cooked. You could easily make this a day before serving to guests if you need to. 
  • If you don’t like oats or don’t have any on hand, simply substitute them with the same amount of flour.
