Dennys Apple Crisp Recipe

One of my absolute favorite desserts is Denny’s Apple Crisp. It is so delicious and satisfying. If you love apple crisp, then I’m sure you’re looking for some new recipes. The problem is that when you google “Apple Crisp,” you get Apple Surprise (not what we’re looking for). This can be a problem if you like to cook and eat. But I’ve found the answer online, and it’s delicious. I hope that your family enjoys this recipe as much as mine!

Apple Crisp

The best apple crisp recipe I’ve ever tried is this simple one. The baked cinnamon apples and brown sugar oatmeal crumble topping give it a warm, homey flavor. It’s the ideal fall treat because it’s made with simple pantry ingredients and fresh apples.

  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • ⅔ cup packed brown sugar
  • ½ cup large flake oats
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter , cut into cubes

Apple Filling

  • 6 large apples , I recommend Granny Smith
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter , melted
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • ⅓ cup white sugar
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg

  • Set the oven’s temperature to 350F. In a 2-quart baking dish, grease it.
  • Mix the flour, brown sugar, oats, cinnamon, and salt in a medium basin.
  • Use a pastry cutter to cut the butter into the dry ingredients after adding it, or use your fingers to rub it in. It should have a crumbly texture when finished, but no significant butter lumps should be visible. As you prepare the filling, place in the refrigerator.
  • The apples should be peeled and cut into 1/8- to 1/4-inch-thick slices.
  • Melted butter, flour, water, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg are all combined in a bowl.
  • The mixture should be poured over the apple slices, then combined.
  • Place the apples in the prepared pan and top with the oats crumble.
  • Bake for 30 to 40 minutes in a preheated oven, or until the top is golden brown and the apples are bubbling around the pan’s edges.
  • Before serving, remove the dish from the oven and let it cool for at least 10 minutes.

Store leftovers covered in the fridge.

What Type of Apples To Use for Apple Crisp?

A Granny Smith apple is the ideal kind of apple to use when cooking an apple crisp. These apples keep their shape better and become delicate without becoming mushy, making them the finest for baking.

The Granny Smith apple has a tendency to be more sour when eaten raw, but when baked, the harshness actually mellows out and is replaced by a sweeter flavor.

Tips for Making Apple Crisp

You can now clearly see how simple it is to make a homemade apple crisp. Here are a handful of my top recommendations for constant success.

  • For the greatest texture, use Granny Smith apples only. Other apples can result in a more mushy outcome.
  • To make the greatest crumble, chill the butter for the topping and work swiftly.
  • Leave off the additional salt in the topping and filling if you’re using salted butter.
  • This recipe can be doubled to get enough for a 9×13 pan. Just continue baking until the middle bubbles.

To Make the Topping

Our favorite apple crisp recipe is this one. A generous amount of crumbs, acidic apples, and a mouthwatering sauce pair perfectly with a scoop of ice cream.

For the Filling:

  • 8 granny smith apples, peeled and cored (you’ll need about 3 pounds total)
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons apple brandy (like Lairds Applejack *see note)

For the Topping:

  • 2 cups rolled oats
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 1 stick of cold butter, cubed plus 2 tablespoons for the top of the crisp
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

  1. Set the oven’s temperature to 400.
  2. The apples should be cut into thick pieces (approximately 1/2″) and put into a big bowl.
  3. To coat the apples, combine brandy, white and brown sugars, salt, cinnamon, ginger, and lemon juice.
  4. Butter a 9″ x 13″ baking dish with a capacity of about 3 quarts or an 8″ x 10″ baking dish with a capacity of 2 quarts. Spread an even layer of the apple filling in the dish.
  5. In a medium bowl, combine all the topping ingredients (apart from the 2 additional tablespoons of butter). Blend the ingredients with two forks or a pastry cutter until the butter is incorporated into the topping.
  6. Pour the crumb topping over the apples, spreading it out to completely cover the apple surface. Add the last 2 tablespoons of butter on the crisp’s top.
  7. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, or until the crisp’s top is browned and the filling is bubbling. A baking dish that is deeper will require more time to cook than one that is shallower.

You can use apple juice, cider, orange juice, or even a clear soda like 7UP or Sprite if you don’t want to use apple brandy.

We also adore incorporating whiskey or bourbon; currently, Crown Royal Salted Caramel is a fave!
