You may have all of these apple crisp without oats ingredients in your refrigerator or pantry and not need to make a trip to the grocery store. See recipe card below for ingredient amounts.
- Apples: We love using Granny Smith apples for this recipe, but you can substitute your favorite kind. We also recommend Honeycrisp apples, Pink Lady apples, Gala apples or Fuji apples.
- Sugars: We use a blend of white and brown sugar in this recipe. Brown sugar (you can use light or dark) adds a richer caramel flavor to your dessert.
- Lemon Juice: Use freshly squeezed lemon juice for best flavor. The lemon juice keeps the apples from turning brown.
- Cinnamon: If you are big fan of cinnamon flavor you can also add an additional teaspoon to the topping. Nutmeg, cloves, allspice or cardamom are also spices that go well with apple desserts.
- Cornstarch: The addition of cornstarch makes sure that the juices will thicken after baking.
This section shows how to cook apple crumble without oats in the oven, with step-by-step photos and details about the technique. For full instructions, nutritional information, to print the recipe or to have the recipe scaled to double or triple, see the recipe card below.
PREPARE: Preheat the oven to 350°F, peel and slice the apples, then toss them with the lemon juice and put them into a baking dish.
🔴 TIP: Do not cut the apples too small, Peel the apples and cut them into similar sized pieces that are no smaller than ⅓” thick. Too small of slices will overcook.
COMBINE SUGARS AND SPICES: Combine the sugars, cornstarch, cinnamon and melted butter in a bowl and blend well.
MAKE TOPPING: In a bowl, combine all topping ingredients. Mix together using a pastry blender until the mixture is mostly tiny crumbles.
🔴 TIP: Add more cinnamon, If you enjoy a rich cinnamon flavor, you can add an additional 1 teaspoon of cinnamon to the topping.
ASSEMBLE: Toss the apples with the seasoning blend. Make sure all the apples are well coated. Then sprinkle evenly with the crumble topping.
BAKE: Cook for 45 minutes until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown.
🔴 TIP: Make sure the topping isn’t getting too dark, In case your apple crisp is browning too fast, cover with aluminum foil until the apples are tender.
SERVE: Let the apple crisp cool for 15-30 minutes before serving with a scoop of ice cream or whipped cream.
Pastry blender – We recommend using a pastry blender as it combines the butter and flour mixture well without melting the butter. In case you don’t have one, you can also use two forks.
HOW TO MAKE AHEAD
While we recommend baking this insanely yummy apple crisp recipe without oats only shortly before serving, you can easily prepare its key elements ahead of time. First, you can prepare your apples, toss them with lemon juice, transfer them to an airtight container and store them in the fridge until ready to use. Additionally, you can prepare the seasoning mixture and the topping in two separate bowls, cover them with cling wrap and store them in the fridge until ready to assemble.
TIPS FOR THE BEST APPLE CRISP RECIPE WITHOUT OATS
Follow these tips to make the best apple crumble without oats.
✔️ Use fresh, crisp apples. We like to use Granny Smith apples but you can also use Honeycrisp or another good baking apple.
✔️ Don’t cut your apples too small. Peel the apples and cut them into pieces that are no smaller than ⅓” thick. Too small of slices will overcook.
✔️ Use a pastry blender or two forks to thoroughly blend together the topping to blend all the sugar and flour into the butter.
✔️ Do not overcook the apple crisp. Cook until the topping is beginning to brown and the apples are bubbling.
Refrigerate: Tightly cover any apple crisp leftovers with cling film and store in the refrigerator for up 4 days. For best flavor eat your apple crisp within the first 2 days after baking.
Freeze: Transfer the completely cooled apple crisp into a freezer safe container and freeze for up to 3 months.
Defrosting: Defrost your apple crumble overnight in the fridge or on the counter for a couple of hours. If you prefer eating apple crisp slightly warm, pop it in the microwave for a couple of seconds before serving.

What Type of Apples Can I use to Make an Apple Crisp?
I know that I’ve seen articles on the “apple varieties” that are best for baking and honestly, I have no recollection of any of their recommendations. When I make this recipe, I always use whatever type of apples I have on hand. The recipe always turns out amazing and I never have any complaints, so I think that it’s totally fine to bake with whatever type of apple you keep on hand for your family to snack on.
As a reference, I’ve made this recipe with the following types of apples and it’s always fantastic:
- Granny Smith Apples
- Honeycrisp Apples

Apple Crisp without Oats (Streusel Topping)
Total Time 1 hour 25 minutes
Did you know that you can make apple crisp without Oats? This simple apple crisp recipe which takes out the need for oats still has a beautiful crisp topping using homemade cinnamon sugar. This melt-in-your-mouth alternative to the classic oat crumble topping will soon become your favorite way to make apple crisp.
Plus, this version with full fresh apples is one of the best things for a scoop of ice cream and some caramel topping.
Why you will love this Apple Crisp Recipe
Enjoy seasonal fruit: Nothing says the months of May-July (the best time of year!) like apple pies and Southern fried apples. And I am about to give you another easy recipe to enjoy apples this summer: Apple Crisp.
Easy Variation: For the most part apple crisp usually contains Oats, which often make up part of that infamous crumb topping. But the best part about this recipe and why it’s one of my favorite desserts is that it’s a warm apple dessert that tastes just like caramel apples and has NO OAT topping.
Perfect Topper and Taste: The full taste of golden brown apples (no brown sugar needed) piled high with an optional scoop of vanilla ice cream is about as delicious as it gets all year long.
In my opinion, apple crisp without oats is one of those apple desserts that tastes a lot like the inside of a classic apple pie. The amazing apple mixture with cinnamon sugar takes tart apples or sweeter apples (doesn’t overly matter what type of apple you use) and makes it one of the best and most comforting desserts for fall.
And while I cannot claim that the intense amount of sugar in this recipe defines it as one of the most healthy recipes, who said dessert has to be healthy?
- Apples: You can use any kind of apple and there really are a lot of varieties. The type of apples I like to use are Honeycrisp but that choice of favorite baking apples is yours. That just happens to be my family’s favorite apple kind. Other best apples are golden delicious apples, Pink lady, or even the tart Granny Smith apples.
- All purpose flour
- White granulated sugar
- Baking powder
- Ground cinnamon
- Real Melted Butter
Steps for an Old Fashioned Apple Crisp
The apple crisp filling is super easy to make but requires a little bit of patience in cutting apples.
Make sure apples are peeled and sliced thin and even.
Making sure apples are not too thick or uneven with the other slices will ensure even cooking throughout the entire dessert.
Prepping Apple Center Filling
The center filling consists of flour, sugar, baking powder, egg, and ground cinnamon.
This mixture is spread evenly on top of apple slices.
Cinnamon Sugar Streusel Topping
Lastly, the crunchy, crumbly topping is a simple ground cinnamon sugar mixture that hardens to a nice pastry crunch on top of the juicy apple center.
While this dessert is pretty sweet in and of itself, it’s fine to serve with caramel sauce and ice cream and makes an amazing addition to flavor.
