The reality show features overweight (most often obese) contestants who compete to win cash prizes by losing the highest percentage of weight during the 12 weeks that the show airs. Needless to say, with seventeen seasons in primetime, the show is a hit. However, the success has not come without harsh criticism. Numerous physicians, nutritionists and weight loss specialists have criticized the format that focuses on competitive weight loss, which has proven counterproductive for many contestants who regained the weight almost as fast as they lost it.

Nowadays, the show is receiving credit for an increase in online search volume for the keyword phrase “how to calculate percentage of weight loss”. As each new season begins, contestants start with a weigh-in to establish his or her starting weight. Divided into teams of three, a cumulative weigh-in determines which team lost the most weight by a percentage of total weight loss. Although this method of tracking weight loss success is as highly criticized as the show’s format, it has sparked an interest among viewers as to how the percentage of weight loss is calculated. Now, low-carb dieting has shown to have the best effect on overall weight loss initially where nutrition is concerned. There are a few different possible mechanisms that explain the reasoning but it works! Although, the effects are reportedly most pronounced during the first 6-12 months.

After that, the effects seem to be more beneficial for overall health rather than weight loss in the long term.

One hypothesis is that low carbs regulate insulin which is an anabolic hormone made by the pancreas that allows the body to use carbs for energy. When insulin is too high, your body stores fat. But when it’s at healthy levels, your body can utilize the fat for energy most optimally.

Another hypothesis for the perceived benefits of going low carb is that since protein and fat are consequently increased in the diet, satiety and less concomitant hypoglycemia contribute largely to the weight loss. Well, this tends to have an effect on hunger hormones.

We do know though, that low carb can be utilized safely and effectively to produce results. However, past the one year mark, low-carb dieting seems to elicit similar or possibly more favorable results when compared to other diets.

So whichever diet you choose to stick with, make sure you’re getting adequate nutrients as you want to ensure you maintain optimal health. It’s also a good idea to get regular checkups just to be sure you’re not deficient in anything either.

And, of course, you should eat quality food sources that consist of mostly vegetables, possibly some lean meat if you’re not vegetarian or vegan, plant fats, and low-glycemic carb sources in moderation.

The full picture

Calculating your weight loss based on your excess body weight – instead of your weight as a whole – is what is typically used in the bariatric clinic.

It requires a few extra calculations, but it gives us more precise information regarding where you are in your weight loss journey compared with your own healthy range.

There are a few steps, but don’t be intimidated, just follow along:

Step 1

In order to determine your excess body weight, you’ll need to find the weight that would put you at a healthy Body Mass Index (BMI) of 25. A healthy BMI ranges from 18-24.9 (for the purpose of this calculation, we will round it to 25). 25 x (height in inches x height in inches / 703) = Weight in lbs to be at a BMI of 25

Example:  You are 5’7” (67 inches; Remember, there are 12 inches in a foot)25 x (67 x 67/703) = A healthy weight starts at 159.6 lbs

Step 2

After you have calculated the weight that puts you at a healthy BMI, now it is time to calculate your excess body weight.Pre-op weight – weight to be at a BMI of 25 = Excess body weight

Example: Your pre-op weight was 320 lbs. and you are 5’7”320 – 159.6 = 160.4 lbs of excess body weight

Step 3

To calculate the percentage excess body weight loss, use the following formula.(Number of lbs you lost / excess body weight) x 100 = Percent of excess body weight loss

Example: Your excess body weight was 160.4 lbs; You lost 120 lbs from 320 lbs and your current weight is 200 lbs. (120 / 160.4) x 100 = You lost 74% of excess body weight

That’s it!

With these calculations in place you will be able to better track your progress and continue to work toward your goals
