As with everything else, only do something if it makes you and your family happy. Unless it does? Avoid it! Personally, I see some noticeable changes in how I feel when I regularly juice, which I attribute primarily to an increase in my overall fruit and vegetable intake. My complexion is clearer and brighter, and I tend to be healthier overall. Juicing is, in my opinion, a fantastic method to establish a healthy habit.

What kind of juicer should I use?

The first item you’ll need if you’re just getting started with juicing is, well, a juicer! Juicers can be divided into two categories: centrifugal (also known as rapid) and masticating (also known as slow or cold-press) juicers.

Centrifugal juicers are generally what you often buy at big-box stores. These juicers have quite a few drawbacks, including the fact that they aren’t particularly effective at extracting juice, that they struggle to juice leafy greens, that they are unbelievably noisy, and that some of them become so hot that the juice’s nutrients begin to break down.

What is the benefit of this kind of juicer? They are fairly inexpensive; one costs around $40. A centrifugal juicer will serve you well if you simply want to juice periodically and not for nutritional reasons (like, say, for cooking or baking).

However, a slow juicer is the way to go if you’re serious about juicing and want to extract the maximum taste and nutritional value from your fruits and vegetables. Although slower than a centrifugal juicer, slow juicers are still fairly rapid, so the term “slow” is rather misleading.

They provide juice of the highest quality while being quiet and simple to clean. The negative? They are expensive. In reality, you should expect to pay upwards of $400 for a high-quality slow juicer (like the Hurom I own and suggest). But it will be money well spent if you intend to juice frequently. I frequently use my Hurom to create nut milks, smoothies (it comes with a separate strainer particularly for preparing smoothies), and to assist me with canning because it is so strong and can do much more than just juice. It’s a device that has secured a desired spot on my kitchen counter!

What are some good starter juice recipes?

When I first began juicing, I was quite overwhelmed by all the bizarre combinations that were available. Green Leafy Vegetables (Spinach (Efo tete), Pumpkin Leaf (Ugu), etc.) Soup: Boil beef or fish pureed in a skillet with salt, Maggi, and sliced onions until fork-tender. Oil should be heated in a pan over medium heat. Fish, beef, tomatoes, blended crayfish, and the remaining onions should be added. Give it another five minutes or so to simmer. Add salt and Maggi to season. Later, you might need to add more. Spinach or pumpkin leaves can be added to the soup. For an additional few minutes, stir and simmer. Seasoning and soup thickness should be adjusted. Serve with amala or semovita after a brief period of stirring. You can also combine leafy vegetables with unripe plantains, yams, potatoes, etc.

Ewedu Soup –  Pick the plant carefully, removing the stem (no leaves permitted), and then thoroughly wash it under lots of water to get rid of any sand that may have remained. Titus fish that has been boiled and deboned should also be added to the blender. Blend until the required consistency is reached. After that, add your blended ingredients to the pot along with some salt and a tiny amount of water, and bring everything to a boil for at least 8 minutes. Serve with semovita or soft amala.

Okro Soup – Blend or grate your okro, then add some palm oil, blended crayfish, and onion, beef puree, or fish into a small quantity of boiling water and allow it to simmer for a minute and add the grated okro and stir, add salt to taste. Boil all ingredients for 5 minutes. Serve with amala or semovita.

Carrot Puree – Scrape the outer layer of the carrots and wash well. Place in a pot, add water just to cover the carrots slightly and allow to steam. Make sure it steams covered for about 20 minutes or until it is very tender. Remove carrot from pot and reserve the cooking liquid and blend until smooth, adding some of the cooking liquid from the pot, 1 tablespoon at a time, till it reaches the desired consistency. You might want to strain out the liquid using a sieve if the puree isn’t smooth enough. You can also add nutmeg to the puree to give it taste. Carrot can also be served to babies as finger food or salad. 

Sweet Potato Meals 

It can be served as puree –  Peel sweet potato and cut into 1.5 cm (half-inch) cubes. In a pan, boil some water and add sweet potato chunks. Reduce to a simmer and cook until tender, around 15 minutes. Place the cooked potato into a large jug/pan and blend until smooth or mash. If the puree is too thick, You can thin it with a splash of milk (you can use breast or baby milk for babies). Sweet Potato Puree can be enjoyed as it is or mixed with a range of other pureed or mashed foods such as apple, pumpkin, carrots etc. 

It can be served as a finger food – peel sweet potato and cut into wedges. Put the sliced potatoes into a pot of water, add turmeric and salt and allow it to boil for some minutes until it is soft and sieve the water. Put a little quantity of butter in the pan and let it melt and fry the boiled potato. When frying, you can add little or no pepper. 

It can also be served as porridge – Peel the potatoes and cut into the pot with water and ingredients (fish, fresh pepper, palm oil,blended onion, vegetables such as ugu leaf, spinach and carrot, seasoning cube and salt to taste), the job is done as all you have to do from then is just check and stir until your porridge gets thick and soft. Then you can mash, add some water if the porridge is too thick.
