Apple crumble…I get warm and fuzzy just thinking about it. YUM! It’s hands down my favourite winter dessert. Hold up didn’t you give up sugar? Sure did, but that’s why my version of this classic dessert is different. There’s no added refined sugar, and this healthy apple crumble tastes so good, you won’t even notice it’s missing. Don’t believe me? I make this for my birthday every year, and my family loves it (they would tell me if it tasted like cardboard…trust me!)

Sensitive to gluten? Switch the oats for quinoa flakes to make it gluten free. Need to make it dairy free? Easy!  Just swap coconut oil for butter in the crumble.

Cooking time is just over an hour, but it’s super easy to make. Promise! Just throw the ingredients in a dish, whack it in the oven, and enjoy the amazing smell of apple crumble wafting from your kitchen. Since my birthday is coming up later this month, think of this as my yummy birthday gift to you. Let’s get this baking started (oh and the party too, love a good party!)


  • low-calorie cooking spray
  • 6 large, sweet dessert apples (such as Fuji, Gala, Braeburn, Pink Lady or Jazz), approx. 800g/1lb 12oz peeled and chopped weight
  • 200g/7oz frozen mixed berries
  • 1 tbsp finely grated orange zest
  • 1 tbsp cornflour
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • pinch of grated nutmeg
  • 3 tbsp maple syrup

For the crumble topping

  • 75g/2¾oz porridge oats
  • 75g/2¾oz walnuts, chopped
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil, melted if solid


  1. Preheat the oven to 180C/160C Fan/Gas 4. Lightly spray a baking dish or pie dish (approx. 20 x 25cm/8 x 10in) with cooking spray.
  2. Peel, core and cut the apples into 1.5cm/5/8in dice and place in a bowl with the berries, orange zest, cornflour, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg and maple syrup. Mix well and spoon into the prepared dish. Press down gently with a spatula to create an even layer.
  3. To make the crumble topping, mix together the oats, nuts and cinnamon in a small bowl. Make a well in the centre and pour in the maple syrup and coconut oil. Stir until fully combined. Crumble the topping over the fruit mixture to cover in an even layer.
  4. Bake for 50–60 minutes, until the topping is lightly golden. Leave to cool for 20–30 minutes before serving.

My Healthy Apple Crumble is a healthier twist on the classic recipe without comprising any flavour!

It’s a single serving for one, so it’s perfect when you feel like a dessert, but don’t want to bake a whole dish. It’s also a vegan recipe made with whole foods and no added sugar, making it a healthier option.

Apple Crumble is also known to be called Apple Crisp to many, which is basically the same thing. Think nice caramelized apples on the bottom which a crispy crumble on top 😋😋

You can either bake this Healthy Apple Crumble in the oven or cook in the microwave for an even faster option!

Ingredients to make Healthy Apple Crumble

  • Apples are the star of the show! I love using pink lady apples but you can use granny smith apples or your favourite kind
  • Cinnamon is used throughout the base and crumble for its beautiful aroma and earthy flavour
  • Rolled oats are the base of the crumble. It’s best to use traditional rolled oats rather than quick oats which have a finer texture
  • Flaked almonds are what I’ve used for a little crunch. You can also use chopped almondswalnuts or any nuts
  • Almond flour is added to help create the crumble which is also gluten free. You can also use whole wheat flour or plain flour, or oat flour
  • Maple syrup is added for a touch of sweetness. You don’t need to add much as the apples are already sweet. I always like to use pure maple syrup which doesn’t have any preservatives or additives
  • Coconut oil is added to the crumble mixture in replacement of butter

How to make Healthy Apple Crumble

Time needed: 25 minutes.

  1. Prepare apple mixturePeel the apple and dice into small cubes and add to a bowl. Add maple syrup, cinnamon and water and mix together. Pour into a small ramekin and press down the top so it’s levelled nice and compact.
  2. Prepare the crumbleAdd all the crumble ingredients in a bowl and mix together so it’s all nicely coated.

    Pour the crumble topping on top of the apples so they’re all covered
  3. Time to CookBake at 180°C/350°F in a preheated oven for 22-25 minutes or microwave for 2-3 minutes. The apples should be soft if you stick a toothpick or fork inside

    Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and enjoy your perfect dessert!

Tips to make Healthy Apple Crumble Recipe

  • Make sure to use a microwave safe or oven safe ramekin, depending on the cooking method you choose
  • I prefer peeling my apple as I find the skin can be a little chewy however you can leave it on if you prefer
  • Ensure you push the apples down slightly into the ramekin so that they are compact and can steam and cook this way
  • When making the crumble, you can use your fingers to combine the ingredients together to create a crumble type of texture
