HEALTHIER APPLE CRUMBLE WITH OAT TOPPING
This Oaty Apple Crumble combines soft cinnamon apples with a crunchy oat topping. This healthier apple crumble is both delicious and deeply comforting! Make it in the oven or your slow cooker.
Apple Crumble or Apple Crisp – whatever the name, sign me up! I adore the contrasting texture of soft cinnamon spiced apples with the crisp, crunchy oat topping.
It’s a delicious and versatile recipe – serve cold and call it breakfast baked oats (!), serve warm with ice cream and you have an indulgent dessert.
HEALTHY APPLE CRUMBLE
You can’t beat a crumble for pure comfort! This healthier crumble cuts down on the fat and sugar but keeps all the flavour.
I used Sukrin Gold (another good option is Swerve Sweets Brown) in this recipe to keep the calories down. It has no aftertaste and I really can’t tell the difference between it and brown sugar! By all means use soft brown sugar or maple syrup if preferred.
It’s a suitable for Slimming World at around 250 calories per serving (without toppings), with pecans used as a healthy extra.
What’s more, this you can make it as a vegan apple crumble and it can be gluten free too! Try serving with fat free yogurt or ice cream plus a drizzle of Sweet Freedom Caramel Syrup!
OAT CRUMBLE TOPPING
Oats are traditionally used to make Apple Crisp in the US and I am so on board! They make a fabulous crumble topping – nutty, crunchy and healthier too!
Use rolled oats (or quick cooking oats) not the jumbo variety and check they (and the scant amount of flour) are gluten free if that is a concern.

APPLE CRUMBLE TOPPING RECIPE:
The Apple Crumble topping recipe was made with oats as it’s base instead of flour to keep it healthy and nutritious. Technically some will call this an apple crisp!
3⁄4 cup old-fashioned oats
1⁄4 cup walnuts, roughly chopped
1 tsp ground cinnamon
3 Tbsp maple syrup
1 1⁄2 Tbsp coconut oil
Combine together the oats, walnuts, cinnamon, maple syrup, and coconut oil in a bowl and mix well.
DO YOU COOK APPLES BEFORE YOU BAKE
No. Cooking the apples before baking is not necessary. They will bake in the oven and become just tender
WHAT APPLES ARE GOOD FOR APPLE CRUMBLE
Choose an apple with a sweet-tart flavor like Granny Smith, Jonagold, or Honeycrisp.
CAN YOU REFRIGERATE APPLE CRUMBLE
Leftover Apple crumble can be refrigerated. Store in an airtight container or wrap firmly using cling wrap. Expect the topping to not be crunchy afterward because the oats do get soaked and become softer. If you are making apple crisp ahead, do not add the topping over the filling. Store the topping separately in a ziplock bag and pour over the filling before you place it in the oven to bake.
CAN YOU REHEAT APPLE CRUMBLE
Apple can be stored for later use and reheated at any time. Either reheat using the microwave or pop it back into the oven and bake for 10-15 minutes. If reheating frozen apple crumble, allow it to thaw in the fridge a day before or overnight before baking or reheating.
CAN I FREEZE APPLE CRUMBLE BEFORE BAKING
Apple crumble can be frozen for 3-4 months whether they are baked or unbaked.
CAN APPLE CRUMBLE BE SERVED COLD
YES. It is more of what your personal preference is. Some may like it cold so it can be enjoyed either hot or cold.

NOTES AND INSPIRATION
Add a handful of blueberries to the apple before filling.
Leftovers can be easily transformed into a spectacular breakfast and served with thick Greek-style yoghurt and a dusting of cinnamon. I also love making my apple crumble smoothie by blending the apple crumble with yoghurt and a spoonful of protein for a delicious breakfast!
You can also bake the crumble separately much like granola and store in an airtight container for up to 1 week. This way you can enjoy crumble instantly!
For a gluten-free crumble, use 150 g of almond meal or flaked almonds in place of the oats.
Use pear in place of apple.
Replace apple with banana and blueberry then cook over a medium heat in a little coconut oil or olive oil before assembling.
You can eat this apple crumble plain but it tastes even more delicious topped with vanilla yogurt ice cream, pouring cream or custard.
There’s plenty of vegan options too from whipped coconut to soy yogurt or ice cream.
Watch your toppings if you are on Slimming World / Weight Watchers – serve with fat-free yogurt or no fat ice cream.
