How to make banana milk! Bananas are a fruit grown in tropical countries and are known for their high carbohydrate content. This is among the reasons why they can be used to make banana milk. I know this might seem like a far cry from coffee, but let’s have some fun today and learn how to make one of the most addictive homemade drinks I’ve ever tried.

Banana Milkshake Recipe (with Step by Step Photos)

Easy Banana Shake

Banana Milkshake, a healthy and creamy shake prepared with ripe banana and milk is rich in potassium, dietary fiber and energy. In this shake recipe, banana provides the primary base for smoothness but ice cream gives richer creaminess to its texture. Cardamom, even though in small amount, gives it an enticing flavor while nuts provide something to chew on occasionally.

1 large Banana
3/4 cup Milk, chilled
1 teaspoon Sugar or to taste
2 scoops Vanilla Ice Cream, optional
A pinch of Cardamom Powder, optional
  1. step-1Take a ripe banana. Peel and cut it into slices. In this recipe, vanilla ice-cream is added to make the milkshake creamy and cardamom powder is added for nice flavor.
  2. step-2Add sliced banana in the jar of a blender or the large jar of a mixer grinder jar.
  3. step-3Add a pinch of cardamom powder. This is an optional ingredient. If it is not available, skip it.
  4. step-4Add 1-teaspoon sugar.
  5. step-5Add 2-scoops vanilla ice-cream.
  6. step-6Pour 3/4 cup milk over it.
  7. step-7Blend until mixture turns smooth. If the mixture looks thin, add extra 1/2 banana and blend again. If mixture looks thick, add more milk and blend again to dilute it. Milkshake of banana with ice cream is ready. Pour it into a serving glass and serve immediately.
  • Adjust the amount of sugar as per your taste.
  • For healthy variation, don’t add sugar and vanilla ice cream.
  • Add 2-3 strands of saffron in milk 30 minutes before making the shake. This will make saffron colored milkshake having extremely delicious aroma which compliments the flavor of cardamom.

Taste: Sweet and creamy

Serving Ideas: Banana shake prepared with milk and ice cream can be served as healthy breakfast drink or as a chilled stomach filling drink in the afternoon. Enjoy it as dessert or party drink too.

When I was a child, I went nuts about banana milk. I definitely was one of those kids who didn’t like the regular “white milk”. But I could drink any flavored milk, particularly banana milk, non-stop.

I loved the flavor so much. You see, banana was a luxury food when I was a child. (So was the milk!)

I also particularly loved the banana milk container, which resembles Korean earthenware – hangari, where you store gochujang and kimchi etc. It was just perfect for my little hands to grip. I felt richer when I was holding on to it! Lol.

Anyway, Korean banana milk has been around for more than 40 years now. And, if you’re an avid K-pop fan, I’m sure you’ve seen Korean idols drink it on TV a lot. So what’s the deal? Here goes.


In essence, Korean banana milk (banana uyu, 바나나 우유) is banana flavored milk. It was first introduced in 1974 by Binggrae and it’s been a steady seller ever since.

Binggrae banana milk contains 85% milk, purified water, sugar, 0.32% banana juice concentrate, carotene, artificial flavors – banana and vanilla. This composition may differ if it is made for export as each countries customs regulations are different. Also, they may have to be adapted for international shipping.

There are other banana flavored milks in Korea and each brand’s ingredients vary. But by far, the most popular banana milk is made by Binggrae. (FYI, If Binggrae sounds familiar, it is also famous for melona – Korean honeydew melon ice pops.)

Like banana? Duh! But you may also taste a subtle vanilla taste too.


Check your local Korean grocers! You might be able to find it if you’re very lucky. Not all Korean grocers sell this. Even I couldn’t get it!

My local Korean grocer owner told me that it was due to the strict Australian customs regulations. In case you’re wondering, the above picture was taken by my sister in Korea at my request. 😁

Korean banana milk in rustic milk bottles


  • 1 ripe banana, sliced or broken into pieces
  • 1/2 cup regular milk
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 Tbsp maple syrup
  • A small drop of pure vanilla extract

*1 Tbsp = 15 ml, 1 Cup = 250 ml


Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth and has milk like consistency. Serve immediately.

It is best to consume the milk immediately as you will notice the separation and discoloration as time goes by. But if you must store it for later, refrigeration for up to 2 days is OK. Just shake the milk very well before you drink it.

So, I decided to make my own version at a fraction of the cost (they are usually $8.99 CDN per a box of 6) with real bananas, milk, vanilla and sugar. That’s it. And I’m going to show you how to make Korean banana milk at home!

This Korean banana milk recipe is super simple and super easy! You’ll be amazed at how much money you will save from buying the store-bought version!

You are simply adding a peeled banana, vanilla extract, sugar and your choice of milk to a blender. Blending it on high until super smooth and that’s it! If you want it super smooth, run it through a sieve but if you have a high-power blender you won’t need to!


  • Use a spotted black banana for best flavour as it’s sweeter in taste
  • A high-power blender will be very helpful in ensuring this milk is blended to a smooth liquid
  • Quality vanilla extract is recommended but not a must
  • Any sugar will do and feel free to adjust the sugar to your liking especially if you can’t have too much of it.
