The sugared rim is made with sugar, chile-lime seasoning and some lime juice. The shot itself calls for mango, mango-orange juice, tequila, agave nectar, chamoy, and dried mango (which is optional).

The chile-lime seasoning gives a beautiful Mexican flavour to the drink. I love chile-lime tajín, which is a readymade seasoning comprised of chile, lime and salt. There are other brands too. Perhaps you have your own favourite.

Frozen mango chunks work fine for this Cinco de Mayo Mexican candy inspired drink although fresh would also work of course. As for the mango-orange juice, check to see what your grocery store carries. There are different brands of this also. If you can’t find one, just use a mixture of orange juice and mango juice.

Silver tequila is nice for this Mexican candy shot recipe. You are going to want to use something that’s smooth enough to make a good cocktail but not fine tequila which deserves to be savoured as a shot.

Agave nectar adds sweetness although liquid artificial sweetener drops can be subbed. As for the chamoy, it’s a savoury condiment which you can use for cocktails, for drizzling over nachos or as a topping for fresh fruit. It’s also a nice sauce to dip meat. Chamoy is actually Asian in origin but it got a south of the border twist.

Chamoy is made with apricot, mango or plum as the base along with lime juice and salt. It comes as a liquid, powder or paste. Unlike chile-lime tajín, which is a brand, chamoy is a food. Tajín is always powder while chamoy comes in different formats. Also, chamoy’s main ingredient is fruit. Both chamoy and chile-lime tajín work beautifully in chile mango Mexican candy shots but it’s nice to know how they’re different from each other.

It’s easy to make spicy mango tequila shots. In fact, you’ll definitely want to make these more than once! First of all, make the sugar rims. Combine the sugar with the chile-lime seasoning then wet the rims of your shot glasses in lime juice and roll in the tajín mixture.

Why this Mexican Candy Inspired Drink is So Good

The reason Mexican candy is so good is a lot of it is fruit-based and that also applies to Mexican drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. In true south of the border style though, fruit isn’t served just as it is, as a sweet snack.

Spicy Mango Tequila Shots FAQs

Can you make chile mango Mexican candy shots in advance?

As you’d expect, chile mango Mexican candy shots are best if you serve them straight away. However, you can store them in a sealed container for a day or two and then just give the mixture a good shake before pouring.

What kind of sugar is best for the rim?

You probably want to use coarse sugar to make the sugared rims because it offers a nice crunch and the texture is similar to that of tajín so it will mix better. Turbinado or demerara are two examples of coarse sugar, either of which would be fine.
