Hmmm so, strawberry topping vs strawberry compote?
The name is the only distinction between strawberry topping and strawberry compote. Although each one will differ very little, they are all essentially just strawberries that have been cooked until thick and syrupy with some fruit juice and perhaps sugar.
How to make it
Strawberries can be used fresh or frozen in this recipe. This is quite easy to make, but if using fresh, make sure they are nicely ripe.
Simply combine all the ingredients in a saucepan (one with a thick base is ideal to better distribute the heat), and heat and simmer for around 15 minutes to make strawberry topping.

- 1 tablespoon lemon juice (notes 1)
- 1 teaspoon lemon zest
- ¼ cup sugar

Spring has finally arrived as the weather is getting warmer and the winter clothes are disappearing! Then my favorite time of year follows. It’s strawberry time! And just in time, I have a simple recipe for strawberry compote that only requires three ingredients and pairs well with practically anything.
I don’t know about you, but I’m constantly thinking of inventive ways to use strawberries. They last for such a brief period of time. In order to reduce waste and make the most of the fruit, I decided to develop a recipe.
I’ve got you covered with my strawberry compote recipe, so don’t worry. It is nutritious, loaded with natural deliciousness, and free of any harmful additives, chemicals, or flavors. When you purchase strawberry sauce or compote from the grocery store, there may be a variety of extra ingredients that significantly slow you down.

And the best part? My strawberry compote only has three ingredients in it – and the possibilities for using it are endless.
THE RECIPE INGREDIENTS
Compotes only contain three basic ingredients – and my recipe means this strawberry sauce will be ready to serve in fifteen minutes.
- Strawberries: The Queen Ingredient. Fresh strawberries work best for a compote or strawberry glaze.
But if you can’t get a hold of them, frozen strawberries will do in a pinch. Make sure to let them completely defrost before using them. It’ll save you a lot of effort!
Other berry fruits can be used in place of strawberries if you still want to produce a delicious fruit compote. Choose from rhubarb, blueberries, cherries, peaches, pears, blackcurrants, raspberries, blackberries, and more. Some fruits will take a little longer to ripen when cooked.
- Lemon: The citrus of the lemon will lift the sweetness of the strawberry and give it a greater depth of flavor. It’s also great to use when making sauces or jams. The lemon can also help the compote set. If you don’t have lemons, orange or grapefruit are great alternatives.
- Sugar: Caster sugar is best; its tiny crystals mean it melts a lot quicker. Granulated sugar will also work. And so will cane sugar if you’re looking to use less refined sugar – it might just take longer to dissolve.

HOW TO MAKE STRAWBERRY COMPOTE
PREPARE YOUR FRUIT
You don’t want any of the leaves or stems to end up in the compote, so wash the strawberries and remove them. Strawberries should be cut in half and added to a medium saucepan.
Lemon juiced in half should be added to the strawberries. Depending on how many strawberries you have, you can modify the amount of lemon juice you use.
TURN ON THE HEAT
To the strawberry and lemon, add the sugar. The mixture should be allowed to come to a boil when you turn the burner to medium heat.
Once it has boiled, slightly lower the heat. The strawberries should occasionally be mashed with a fork or a potato masher to release all of their juices. But here, be gentle. Avoid overcrushing the fruit to prevent it from sticking to the pan’s bottom.

Continue to cook for 5-10 minutes longer.
Run the compote through a sieve into a clean bowl or jug if you want it to be extremely smooth. While the compote drains, create circles in it with a wooden spoon. This will help your strawberry compote be free of any undesirable lumps and seeds.

When ready, put the compote aside to chill. Then, pour it into a clean, airtight container. For optimal results, store it in the refrigerator for one to two weeks.
The strawberry topping can also be frozen for up to three months. Put it in the refrigerator to thaw overnight when necessary.
Reheat it in a saucepan over medium-high heat if necessary. If necessary, add a teaspoon or two of water.

If you don’t have strawberries, but still want to make a delicious compote, you can replace them with other berry fruits. Choose from raspberries, blackberries, blackcurrants, blueberries, cherries, peaches, pears, rhubarb, etc. Different fruits will need slightly longer to break down while cooking.
How to store: It’s best to keep the compote in an airtight jar in the fridge for about 1-2 weeks.
You can also freeze the strawberry topping for up to 3 months. When needed, place it in the fridge to thaw overnight.
If you want to reheat it, do so in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Add a teaspoon or two of water if needed.
