My husband loves to cook and decided to get an Instant Pot earlier this year as a fun kitchen gadget to play around with.
We’ve experimented with a lot of different entrees, including Instant Pot Hawaiian Meatballs, and we’ve been loving how the flavors come out!
In an effort to recreate some of our favorite take-out dishes, we thought we’d play around with a recipe for Instant Pot teriyaki chicken.
It’s something that our whole family will eat (even my picky 6-year-old) and it’s ready in just minutes.
This Instant Pot teriyaki chicken recipe uses bottled sauce to make it easier, but you can also make your own teriyaki sauce from scratch.
Teriyaki Chicken FAQs
What’s the best bottled teriyaki sauce?
Our family likes Yoshida’s, Soy Vay, or the Kikkoman teriyaki sauce. There are low sodium and gluten-free options with several bottled teriyaki sauces, so it’s always best to research if you have dietary restrictions.
How healthy is teriyaki chicken?
Teriyaki chicken can be high in sodium and sugar, depending on the type of sauce you use and how big of a portion you eat. Otherwise, teriyaki chicken is a great source of protein and kids usually gobble it up!
What does teriyaki chicken taste like?
It’s so yummy! It’s a great mix of slightly sweet and slightly salty. But the flavor isn’t overly powerful, so it’s something most people enjoy eating. And the flavor changes a bit when you grill it (the smoky flavor is pretty awesome!)

How to Make Instant Pot Teriyaki Chicken Breast with Bottled Sauce

Combine brown sugar, ketchup, teriyaki sauce, garlic, black pepper and sriracha in a bowl.
Pour over the chicken breasts and stir to combine.

Add the chicken with sauce to your Instant Pot. Set to Sealing and pressure cook on high for 15 minutes.

When it’s finished cooking, do a quick release.

Remove the chicken to a plate and turn your Instant Pot on Saute setting.
If your sauce is too thin, take ¼ cup of water and add 3 tbsp cornstarch, stir into a slurry. Add the slurry to the Instant Pot and cook until it thickens.
Cube the cooked chicken or you can serve the chicken breast whole.
Serve this teriyaki chicken over rice, sprinkle with sesame seeds and chives.

To make this a freezer meal:
Combine the marinade and chicken together in a gallon size Ziploc bag. This will keep in the freezer for 3 months.
When you’re ready to make it, thaw the bag overnight in the fridge and then continue the steps above for preparation in the Instant Pot.

Teriyaki Chicken with Bottled Store-Bought Sauce

I use chicken breasts in this recipe, which calls for a 10 minute cook time on High Pressure. I allow the pressure and steam to release naturally for 10 minutes.
Additional Toppings and Substitution Ideas

How to Substitute Chicken Thighs
I typically cook bone-in thighs for 12 minutes and with a 10-minute natural release of steam. You can also brown bone-in thighs first using the Saute method on the Instant Pot.
Boneless thighs can follow the same 10 minutes of cook time as noted in the recipe.
Can You Use Frozen Chicken
Frozen chicken will need to cook for 13 minutes with 10 minutes of natural release of steam.
How to Store it/How Long it Will Last in the Fridge
This dish will last 3-4 days in the fridge. Store it covered and tightly sealed.
Freezer Tips
Place the leftovers in a sealable bag or container and store in the freezer for up to 3 months. I like to defrost overnight in the fridge, as opposed to microwaving from frozen.

Maybe it is because I was born in Hawaii but I love anything teriyaki! I could put this sauce on just about any piece of meat and it just tastes amazing.
Just like any other recipe you can add or omit what you love or don’t prefer to have added.
You save yourself a step by cutting my chicken into chunks before adding it to my Instant Pot / pressure cooker too.

We all need a few recipes “in our pocket” that only use a few ingredients and take less than 15 minutes.
You know for those evenings when you only have an hour in between soccer practice and homework….we’re there a lot. 😉

I haven’t tried it together but imagine if you had a trivet on top of the rice with your chicken and sauce in an approved pot it would be fine in 12 minutes on high.
Here are the basic steps to make our pressure cooked chicken with a sweet and savory sauce.
- If making homemade teriyaki whisk ingredients in a bowl.
- Dice and add chicken into your pot.
- Pour in bottled or the sauce you made on top.
- Stir contents.
Close lid and steam valve and set to high pressure for 3 minutes. If adding more than 3 med. diced chicken breasts you may need to increase time to 4-5 minutes
- Wait a minute once it ends and then do a quick release
- Open the lid and if you’d like sauce a bit thicker whisk 1 tbsp cornstarch with hot liquid and add into pot on saute
