They want a healthier pop-like beverage that they can drink anywhere they go — and Sparkling Ice is just that. But is it good for weight loss? And could you use it as part of your diet strategy? Ways Sparkling Ice Good for You

Sparkling ice comes in a range of 18 regular flavors, and then a few other ones with caffeine added. They are all claimed to be healthy mostly due to their low calorie and ingredients list.

1. Low Calories

Even a few years back, Sparkling Ice was a zero-calorie drink. But after a lot of claims and disputes, the company went back on their claim and now labels the bottles as 5 calories per serving. Compared to regular soda, that is a pretty substantial reduction. Almost by around 150 calories per serving.

2. No Refined Sugar

Another reason why Sparkling Ice is better than sodas is that they do not use any refined sugar. Refined or white sugar is chock-full of calories and is one of the main ingredients of regular carbonated beverages. Sparking Ice goes the route of adding artificial sweeteners like sucralose instead.

3. Natural Flavoring

Natural Flavoring is the third variable of this equation. It means that all the flavoring they use in their product is extracted naturally from fruits or trees, and they are definitely healthier than artificial flavors as both are calorie-nill.

4. Good for Keto

Due to their ingredients list, sparkling ice can easily label their product keto-friendly. And yes, it works well with a keto diet if that is what you are looking for.

5. Added Vitamins

Finally, this company from the US adds vitamins to their drinks. Namely, Vitamin B6, B12, D, Niacin, Biotin, and Pantothenic Acid. As we all know, vitamins are necessary and really good for us. So it is the last reason why sparkling ice can be deemed healthy.

Is Sparkling Ice Bad for You? (The Ugly Truth)

Since we said that Sparkling ice is not great for your health, we owe you an explanation of why. It is for a few different reasons, actually, and they each have their own two legs to stand on. We suggest you read the following section carefully to see if you fall under one of these risky categories. 

1. Splenda or Sucralose

This is the primary sweetening agent on the Sparkling Ice brand of products. In pursuit of the zero-calorie tag, they ditched the traditional regular sugar. Sucralose is incredibly low calorie, and it is used in diet cokes and other diet but sweet beverages. 

So the use of it is pretty common, and FDA approved. But that does not mean it is good for you.

Artificial sweeteners are appealing because they do not instantly influence blood sugar levels or contain calories; nonetheless, they have various negative side effects. 

Sucralose includes chlorine, a dangerous chemical that should not be consumed in any form. Chlorine is not hazardous in modest doses since the kidneys, intestines, and liver can filter it out of the bloodstream and eliminate it. Daily intake, on the other hand, can have serious implications, such as cancer. 

Several other side effects of sucralose have been reported, including poor eyesight, gastrointestinal (GI) tract difficulties, poor gut health, allergic reactions, blood sugar surges, increased appetite, and weight gain.

2. Carbonation

As a result of the carbonated water in Sparkling Ice, it should be mentioned that the drink may wreak havoc on many existing digestive conditions, including heartburn, aggravation of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and irritation of existing stomach ulcers, among others. 

In addition to providing discomfort to people who already suffer from gastrointestinal disorders, it has the potential to irritate the digestive tract of others. 

Sparkling Ice is a poor choice for restoring electrolytes after exercise because it does not allow your body to absorb enough water to rehydrate properly. This is also due to the added carbonation.

Additionally, while minor, carbonation can be bad for your dental health, as carbon dioxide can eat away the enamels of your teeth.

3. The “Added Vitamin” Scam

Yes, sure, Sparkling Ice has added vitamins. But can your body even use them properly? Vitamin Water has been rigorously studied and discovered that most of the additional vitamins had no effect on the body – especially because most individuals already have enough of the extra vitamins! 

Considering that vitamins are water-soluble, it is probable that you are already acquiring these nutrients through a diversified diet. Excess water-soluble nutrients are eliminated in urine.

While little research on Sparkling Ice’s vitamin content has been done, it’s probable that the very same issue exists.

4. Other Toxic Ingredients

These drinks also include maltodextrin and food dyes.  Food coloring has been connected to ADHD, whereas maltodextrin has been associated with allergies, excess weight, and bloating.

Does Sparkling Ice have electrolytes?

Sparkling Ice does not contain electrolytes. It includes vitamins, antioxidants, and plenty of water. These ingredients provide hydration.

The brand’s desired target audience is the average person looking for water or a thirst-quenching drink on the shelves of a store. So, if you are an athlete or someone seeking electrolyte replenishment and extra hydration after an intense workout, then Sparkling Ice isn’t for you.

Does Sparkling Ice contain alcohol?

Sparkling Ice is a non-alcoholic drink. However, the new Sparkling Ice Spiked – introduced in November 2020, contains four percent alcohol in a serving of 12 ounces.

The alcohol in Sparkling Ice Spiked is derived from cane sugar. Sugar alcohol provides a fine texture to the drink, however, it comes with certain negative effects. It is not easily digestible and can cause bloating and diarrhea.

Is Sparkling Ice bad for kidneys?

Limited consumption of Sparkling Ice may not be bad for your kidneys. Excessive and addictive consumption of the drink would surely affect the kidneys owing to the carbonation, acidity levels, and additives.

What Ingredients Are in Sparkling Ice?

Let’s start by actually looking at some Sparkling Ice ingredients. Below is a table showing two product lines—the Classic (Zero Sugar) and the Caffeine line. I will not cover Sparkling Ice Spiked (hard seltzer) in this post.

Sparkling Ice Ingredients.

Here are the biggest points I notice from these ingredients:

  • Sparkling Ice has sucralose. On the bright side, Sparkling Ice doesn’t have sugar. But instead, it has sucralose. This is a bit of a controversial artificial sweeteners, and it’s likely the worst aspect of Sparkling Ice, nutritionally.
  • Sparkling Ice is free of artificial colors. Many similar drinks have artificial colors. But such dyes are controversial for safety, so I’d consider it positive that Sparkling Ice doesn’t have any. Instead Sparkling Ice is colored with fruit and vegetable juice.
  • Sparkling Ice has green tea extract. Green tea extract is often touted for health benefits like weight loss, skin health, brain health, blood pressure regulation, blood sugar regulation, exercise recovery, and more. I’m not sure if the dose in Sparkling Ice is large enough to do much… but it seems like a nice little addition, anyway.
  • Sparkling Ice has added vitamins and antioxidants. I wouldn’t consider this a huge benefit, as most of these vitamins would likely be absorbed better from whole foods anyway. In fact, there’s even a potential risk that such isolated nutrients can become negative for health. But on balance, it’s probably still beneficial.
  • Sparkling Ice does not have added electrolytesThis is a neutral point, really. Unless you’re exercising or sweating hard, you usually don’t need added electrolytes in your drinks. But if you’re looking for that… look elsewhere.

In my opinion, the main concern in Sparkling Ice for most people would just be the artificial sweetener, sucralose. So we’ll cover that in-depth in the next section.

Does Sparkling Ice Have Artificial Sweeteners?

Sparkling Ice contains the artificial sweetener sucralose. Sucralose is FDA approved and generally recognized as safe, but there remains some controversy around the long-term health impacts, particularly on gut bacteria and insulin sensitivity.

The most widely controversial artificial sweetener is probably aspartame. Personally, I avoid aspartame because of the research showing possible connections to depression. Sparkling Ice does not have aspartame.

Another sweetener people sometimes have questions about is xylitol, especially since it is bad for dogs. Sparkling Ice does not contain xylitol.

So let’s look at the health concerns around the actual sweetener in Sparkling Ice—sucralose:

  • Sucralose seems to be a migraine trigger for some people.
  • Sucralose may cause insulin resistance through multiple mechanisms
  • Sucralose has been shown to have a surprisingly minimal effect on weight loss.

Most of the health concerns around artificial sweeteners are not well proven. But for many people, the risk feels hazardous anyway. There’s just some uncertainty about how the human body reacts long-term to any of these artificial sweeteners.

Therefore, some consumers may feel uneasy consuming such sweeteners in large quantities, like having Sparkling Ice every day.

The next two sections will include more about the potential impact of sucralose on weight loss and blood sugar levels.
