Prep Time: 10 minutes

Total Time: 50 minutes

Servings: 6 servings

Calories: 371.76kcal

  • ▢6 Granny Smith apples
  • ▢1 cup 200 g sugar
  • ▢3/4 cup 90g flour
  • ▢1/3 cup 80g butter, at room temperature
  • ▢1/4 cup 60ml water
  • ▢1 teaspoon 5g ground cinnamon
  • ▢1/2 teaspoon 2.5g fine salt

  • Set your oven’s temperature to 350°F (180°C).
  • Apples should be peeled and chopped into medium-sized slices. Aim for around 10 chunks per apple; it’s alright if they aren’t all the same size. If they are too little, you won’t get apple crisp; you’ll get applesauce. They will also be dry if they are too big.
  • Apple chunks should be put in a baking dish (8 inches). Spread out the water equally over the fruits.
  • Sprinkle the salt and cinnamon equally.
  • Flake the flour and sugar together in a small bowl.
  • With a fork, mash in the room-temperature butter after adding it. Make a thick paste that contains lots of crumbs.
  • With this mixture, smother the apples.
  • When the top is golden brown and the apples are bubbling, bake for about 40 minutes.
  • Get the best vanilla ice cream to accompany the dish! with a Pedro Ximenez drink

We frequently prepare apple crisp, the best apple crisp recipe there is. Apple crisp is a traditional fall dish. It’s created from scratch using just a few basic ingredients like warm cinnamon, fresh apples, and traditional oats.

This apple crisp dish is ideal if you don’t have time to chill pie crusts like in these apple pie or apple crumble pie recipes. Even if you do have time, I dare assert that apple crisp is better than pie (gasp) since it is simply so good!

Fall baking dish perfection with the sweet and sour apple filling and buttery apple crisp topping! You’ll become everyone’s favorite baker if you serve it warm with a scoop (or two) of vanilla ice cream!

As always, I like to take a moment to chat about the ingredients in this apple crisp recipe and some possible substitutions!

  • Apples. I recommend a sweet/tart apple like granny smith or pink lady, but any variety works.
  • Brown sugar. Light or dark brown sugar can be used! Dark brown sugar will give it a more pronounced molasses taste.
  • All-purpose flour. To make this apple crisp recipe gluten-free, substitute an all-purpose gluten-free baking flour for the all-purpose flour.
  • Lemon juice. there really isn’t a great substitute for lemon juice. You could use lime juice or it can just be omitted. However I really love the little bit of brightness and tang it imparts in the dish.
  • Old-fashioned oats. Quick-cooking oats can be used in place of old-fashioned.

This apple crisp recipe is one of my favorites because it’s so easy to make. Let’s go through the steps together (and don’t forget to watch the video; there are a few, but they are all simple and easy)!

To begin, combine the dry ingredients for the crisp topping with the slightly softened butter using a fork, pastry cutter, or your hands. The combination should resemble the image on the right, which shows sand with some butter bits in it.

Stir the oatmeal in until it is thoroughly combined with the butter and dry ingredients. Then, while preparing the filling, put the crisp topping aside.

These tips can help you make the apple crisp filling.

Peeling, coreing, and slicing the apples is the first step in making this apple crisp recipe. I have one of these apple slicers, corers, and peelers, and it really helps me save time! As you can see in the picture below, I made my apple crisp with smaller apple chunks since I love them.

It’s time to pre-cook the apples after they have been peeled, cored, and cut into slices. Cook them for 6 minutes on high in a microwave-safe container.

After that, place the cooked apples in a colander and let them drain and cool for at least 10 minutes. Make sure the colander has room at the bottom for the water to drain!

The filling components should be mixed thoroughly. Usually, I use the same fork I used to produce the crumb topping to combine the filling’s ingredients.

When everything is properly dispersed, add the cooked, cooled, and drained apples to the mixture of try ingredients.

Pick a baking dish, and then add the apple filling to it. Although I typically use a 9×9″ baking dish, you may also use an 8×8″ or, as shown above, a 10 x 7″ dish. Another option is a round casserole dish. Whatever dish you select must have a capacity of at least 2 to 2.5 quarts; this is crucial.

The crumble topping should next be distributed evenly over the filling using your hands!

It’s time to bake now! Bake the apple crisp until the topping is just beginning to brown and the mixture is bubbling. Simply cover the pan with aluminum foil and continue baking if you see the top beginning to brown before the filling bubbles!

On a wire rack, place the apple crisp to cool for at least 30 minutes. Before serving, the cooling process allows the filling to gel and everything to slightly stiffen up.

This apple crisp recipe is best served warm! Here are some more serving suggestions:

  • Top with a serving of vanilla ice cream.
  • Add some of your best handmade whipped cream on top!
  • Add some caramel sauce to this apple crisp.
  • Add some nuts (like these candied almonds or these cinnamon sugar pecans) for added crunch.

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 5-7 days.

You can freeze this apple crisp in a few ways:

  1. Prepare the apple crisp, wrap it securely in plastic wrap, cover with foil, and freeze it on a flat surface for up to two months to freeze the unbaked crisp. Bake as directed in the recipe after thawing over night.
  2. Defrost cooked crisp.
  3. The apple crisp should be baked, let to cool fully, then wrapped in plastic wrap or foil and frozen for up to two months. Heat in the oven while covered with foil until well heated.
  4. For up to two months, freeze individual servings in an airtight container. Reheat in the microwave or oven on warm.
