Is it a salad or is it a dessert? You decide. This Orange Creamsicle Salad is an old-fashioned favorite that pleases even the youngest crowds. It’s perfect for a light, summery dessert, and it goes great alongside a heavy holiday meal. There’s no time you can’t serve this salad!

The tang of the juicy mandarin oranges surrounded by sweet cream makes this dessert salad feel decadent and rich without heavy and too much after a meal! I like to make this for a quick weekend dinner because it’s half fruit salad, half healthier dessert option!

Did I mention this Orange Creamsicle Salad is only FOUR ingredients? You can throw this recipe together quickly if you need an extra side for dinner or want to add a bit of sweetness to the meal.

Ingredients

  • Cool Whip — you can also use whipped cream here, but I find the Cool Whip is lighter in flavor and calories. Make your own homemade Cool Whip if you like.
  • Cottage cheese
  • Orange Jello
  • Can of Mandarin Oranges

My favorite part is when I bite into the juicy mandarin oranges that are mixed throughout! The mix of the acidic oranges and the sweet cream reminds me of the quintessential orange creamsicles of childhood.

What I used for my Orange Creamsicle Salad

  1. Colander: This colander is great for straining and washing! The handles make it easy to use and the holes are big enough to drain your liquids off while keeping the food in the colander!
  2. Measuring spoons and cups: Everyone needs a good set of measuring cups and spoons, and these are excellent! The handles make the measuring tools easy to attach and stay together, so no more losing that tiny teaspoon in your drawer!
  3. Mixing bowls: These glass mixing bowls are beautiful and practical. I love being able to see all my ingredients through the bowl and they nest inside each other for space saving!

This recipe barely needs a recipe, it’s so easy. Combine, stir, and you’re done!

How to Make Orange Creamsicle Salad

  1. Mix cottage cheese and orange Jello together in a large bowl.
  2. Add Cool Whip and stir.
  3. Set five mandarin oranges aside for garnish. Add in remaining mandarin oranges and stir. Refrigerate for 2 hours.
  4. Garnish with mandarin oranges before serving.

Versions of this recipe have been made for generations! In my family, it’s typically served at special occasions like Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner. It’s sweet, creamy, fluffy and delicious without being too rich or heavy.

Anywhere you would serve a fruit salad, you could definitely have this! My kids like to have this plain, nothing but a bowl and a spoon, and eat it like ice cream. Nothing wrong with that! It’s delicious on its own and goes great with other dishes, both sweet and savory!

I like to serve this simply, in a large serving bowl with a decoration of a handful of mandarin oranges fanned across the top for decoration as well as a sprinkling of toasted coconut.

How long does Orange Creamsicle Salad last?

This dessert salad, as with many creamy fruit salads, will last about five days in the refrigerator, so this is a perfect make ahead dish! The longer the flavors sit together, the more they meld together, so feel free to make this the day before your next pool party or barbecue for an even fresher flavor the next day!

I prefer to decorate my Orange Creamsicle Salad within about half an hour of serving to keep the mandarin oranges from drying out in the air or to keep from losing the coconut topping to the mixture. 

ORANGE CREAM FRUIT SALAD

Orange Cream Fruit Salad is a delicious fruit salad filled with oranges, pineapple and bananas with a sweet orange cream mixed in! Perfect fruit salad recipe to go alongside holiday dinner.

Orange Cream Fruit Salad has been a family favorite recipe for years.  I love fruit, and while fresh fruit is my favorite, this is a great recipe to make in the winter when good produce is hard to find (and expensive!), because it is primarily made with canned fruit. It has also come in handy many times when I need to make a side dish and don’t have time to run to the store since many of the ingredients are ones that I keep on hand regularly.

WHAT KINDS OF FRUIT ARE IN ORANGE CREAM FRUIT SALAD?

I have made this fruit salad for family dinners, potlucks and we always have it on Easter. One of the things that I love about fruit salads is that you can so easily adapt them. This recipe is delicious with canned pineapple, mandarin oranges and bananas, but you can definitely add other fruits or swap any of those out. I’ve added grapes, apples, kiwi, strawberries and raspberries and all of them have tasted wonderful with the orange/vanilla coating.

INGREDIENTS IN ORANGE CREAM FRUIT SALAD

  • 3.4 oz. pkg. instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 3/4 – 1 1/2 cups milk*
  • 1/3 cup frozen orange juice concentrate
  • 8 oz container Cool Whip
  • 20 oz. can pineapple chunks or tidbits, drained well
  • 11 oz. can mandarin oranges, drained well
  • 2 bananas, sliced

HOW TO MAKE ORANGE CREAM FRUIT SALAD

  1. Combine pudding mix, milk and orange juice concentrate in a mixing bowl.
  2. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed for about 2 minutes and then fold in the Cool Whip.
  3. Gently mix in the canned fruit and chill in the fridge for 2-3 hours until ready to serve. Feel free to add more fruit.  I often add more oranges or bananas, and sometimes I add strawberries and mini marshmallows too.  If you are adding apples and/or bananas, wait until just before serving to add them. Enjoy!

*We’ve made this recipe dozens of times with successful results, yet we’ve gotten several comments that the salad is too soupy. Our advice is to reduce the milk to 3/4 cups initially, and if the consistency is to thick for your liking, feel free to add more.

Orange Cream Fruit Salad

CAN YOU REPLACE THE COOL WHIP IN FRUIT SALAD?

If you can’t find Cool Whip where you live or you prefer not to use it in recipes, you can use stabilized whipped cream instead. If you just use regular whipped cream, the consistency will be too light and the cream will not hold up very well when mixed into the jello salad. It’s very simple to make your own stabilized whipped cream and it just takes a few minutes!

HOW DO YOU MAKE STABILIZED WHIPPED CREAM?

To make stabilized whipped cream, you will need the following ingredients:

  • 4 ounces of cream cheese (softened to room temperature)
  • 1/3 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream.
  1. Beat the cream cheese with the powdered sugar and vanilla until soft and smooth.
  2. In a separate bowl, beat the whipping cream just until soft peaks form.
  3. Add the cream cheese mixture to the whipped cream and beat until stiff peaks are formed. Store in the refrigerator until ready to use.

A little tip for making whipped cream faster. Use a metal bowl for whipping the cream and place the bowl in the freezer for about 30 minutes before you make the whipped cream. This will significantly decrease the amount of time that you will need to beat the whipped cream – the process will go much faster!

This Orange Creamsicle Salad Is the Perfect Nostalgic Dessert

In our family, no gathering or holiday table was complete without a few “sweet salads” (as we call them) to choose from. These were the dishes that tasted like dessert, but were called a salad. Why? Well, for us, my grandma had a simple explanation. If they were salads, they were eaten with the meal, and then we could still enjoy some pie or cake too! That is definitely logic I can relate to!

The inspiration behind this fluff dessert was that beloved childhood treat so many of us would choose from the ice cream truck. The orange popsicle filled with vanilla ice cream that was synonymous with a hot sunny day. If you didn’t know, there is also a cocktail version made with vodka, cream, orange liquor, milk and simple syrup.

Sometimes when I create recipes I can forget the most common dishes in our world are brand new to others. Fluff salads as we all them usually have a base flavor from fruit or pudding and then are made fluffy with Cool Whip. They can have other various add ins such as nuts, marshmallows or even candy.

Best Creamsicle Salad Tips

  • Do NOT prepare the pudding. You are only using the dry mix.
  • Real whipped cream does not work as well. The salad will not set up the same way.
  • An hour to chill is only the minimum. Overnight works too.
  • When mixing the Jell-O and boiling water, make sure it dissolves completely to avoid a gritty texture.

Ingredients

Creamsicle Salad

  • 1 small box orange Jell-O
  • 1 small box instant vanilla pudding
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • ½ cup cold water
  • 1 (8-oz) tub Cool-Whip
  • 11 oz mandarin oranges, drained, reserve a few for garnish
  • 1 cup mini marshmallows, reserve a few for garnish

Preparation

  1. In a large bowl, combine Jell-O and boiling water. Mix well to dissolve.
  2. Add cold water. Chill for 20 minutes.
  3. Whisk in pudding mix until smooth. Chill for 10 minutes, until thickened.
  4. Fold in Cool-Whip, oranges and marshmallows.
  5. Chill until set, about an hour.
  6. Garnish with extra oranges and marshmallows.
